Dogs lie in a square in the center of the Albanian city of Durrës, next to the city's largest mosque, the Grand Mosque of Durrës (Xhamia e Madhe). The Albanian government doesn't allocate funds for public dog shelters (in 2018, there wasn't a single shelter in all of Albania). The dogs can be found in various states of disrepair—dirty, tired, and hungry—but there were also some with more energy and seemingly "better fed." Some dogs have a plastic ear clip, a sign that the dog has been sterilized and vaccinated against rabies by the government, Durrës, Albania, March 29, 2024
Architecture is a common sight in Albania. Damaged and unfinished buildings can be attributed to many factors, one of which is the earthquake that struck Durrës on November 26, 2019. The earthquake was so strong that it was also felt in countries such as Greece, Italy, and Switzerland. It killed 51 people and injured over 3,000. Traveling through Albania, one notices that the country is still struggling with the effects of the earthquake. The state of buildings may also be due to a lack of funds to complete investments or begin reconstruction. Durrës, Albania, March 29, 2024
